Short answer Sea freight from China is cheaper for almost every shipment above about 1 CBM. Air is billed on chargeable weight (1 CBM counts as 166.67 kg), sea on volume. With our labelled assumptions, air only matches LCL sea below about 62.07 kg. Air takes days, sea takes about 4 to 8 weeks.
Key takeaways
Air bills the bigger of real and volume weight: IATA's divisor is 6,000 cm³ per kg, so 1 CBM counts as 166.67 kg.
Sea LCL bills per revenue tonne: 1 CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is greater, plus fixed CFS and document fees.
Rates on 28/10/2026: Freightos lists China to North Europe air at USD 4.35 per kg. Its Asia to North Europe ocean index is USD 3,551.00 per 40ft.
Break-even is small: in our example, air beats LCL only below 62.07 kg. At 2 CBM, sea is 3.11 times cheaper; for a full 40ft, 8.75 times.
Sea-air via Dubai is disrupted: the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to container ships since late February 2026.

Your goods are packed and your supplier asks one question: by ship or by plane? Choosing between sea vs air freight from China looks easy. Sea is cheap and slow, air is fast and dear. But that rule breaks down for small and light shipments.
Most guides stop at "air costs 5 to 10 times more". What really decides it is how your cargo is measured: kilos for air, cubic metres for sea, and a minimum charge on both. This guide shows the break-even point, the transit times and the current rate indices, and works through three real-size shipments.
Sea vs air freight from China: the quick verdict
Three questions decide it: how big is the shipment, how fast must it arrive, and what is it worth per kilo? Size matters most. Sea has a minimum charge, so a few cartons can cost the same by plane.
| Factor | Sea freight (LCL or FCL) | Air freight |
|---|---|---|
| How you are billed | Per CBM or revenue tonne (LCL); per container (FCL) | Per chargeable kg: actual or volume weight, whichever is higher |
| Rate level, 28/10/2026 | FBX Asia to North Europe USD 3,551.00 per 40ft | FAX China to North Europe USD 4.35 per kg |
| Transit, port to port | About 15 to 25 days to the UAE; 35 to 45 days to Genoa via the Cape (indicative) | About 4 to 7 days to Milan; 5 to 7 days to Los Angeles (indicative) |
| Best for | Anything above about 1 CBM, heavy or bulky goods, repeat stock | Samples, urgent stock, small and dense high-value goods |
| Main risk | Delays, rerouting, port storage charges | High cost on light, bulky goods; capacity cuts in peak weeks |
The decision tree below turns these questions into a route. One rule matters most: compare door-to-door quotes, not the freight line. In our example, fixed fees are most of a small sea bill.
The table only covers freight. Duty and VAT rates do not depend on the mode. The landed cost guide for China imports shows how freight feeds into them.
How carriers measure your cargo: chargeable weight, CBM and the 1:6000 rule
Airlines and shipping lines measure the same carton in different ways. That single fact explains most of the price gap. Air charges for space as if it were weight. Sea charges for space directly.
1. Air freight: chargeable weight
Maersk explains that air volume weight is length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6,000. It calls 6,000 an industry standard set by IATA (the International Air Transport Association). The airline bills the higher of actual weight and volume weight.
One cubic metre is 1,000,000 cm³. Divided by 6,000, that is 166.67 kg per CBM, often written as the "1:6" or "1:167" ratio. So a 1 CBM box of pillows weighing 40 kg is billed as 166.67 kg.
2. Express couriers: a stricter divisor
Express services set their own formulas. DHL Express says it typically uses a divisor of 5,000. The same carton is billed 20.00% heavier by a 5,000 divisor than by 6,000. Some carriers also change the divisor by origin, so check your quote.
3. Sea LCL: the revenue tonne
Less than container load (LCL) is shared container space. Goodhope Freight explains it is charged per revenue tonne: 1 CBM or 1,000 kg, whichever is greater. Fixed document and container freight station (CFS) charges come on top.
Here is what this means in practice: sea treats 1 CBM as up to 1,000 kg, while air treats it as 166.67 kg. Sea gives you six times more weight per cubic metre before weight starts to cost extra.
4. Sea FCL: the box price
Full container load (FCL) is one price per container, up to the weight limit. When a container beats LCL is a separate question.
The break-even point: when air costs the same as sea
The break-even is the shipment size where air and sea cost the same, door to door. Below it, fly. Above it, sail, unless speed earns you more than the gap. For most goods the break-even is tiny, because air is billed for every kilo while sea starts with a flat minimum.
To find it, use one simple model. Air cost = fixed air fees + air rate × chargeable kg. Sea LCL cost = fixed LCL fees + LCL rate × revenue tonnes, with a minimum of 1. All four inputs below are labelled assumptions, except the published air index.
Air rate: USD 4.35 per kg, the Freightos Air Index for China to North Europe on 28/10/2026.
Air fixed fees: USD 250.00 per shipment for terminal, screening and documents (assumption).
LCL rate: USD 120.00 per revenue tonne (assumption).
LCL fixed fees: USD 400.00 for CFS, documents and delivery order (assumption).
Below 1 CBM, sea costs a flat USD 520.00 (400.00 + 120.00). Air reaches that figure at (520.00 − 250.00) ÷ 4.35 = 62.07 kg of chargeable weight. For average-density cargo, that is about 0.37 CBM, or a few cartons.
Above the break-even, the gap grows fast. At 1 CBM of average cargo, air costs USD 975.01 against USD 520.00 by sea. Every extra cubic metre adds USD 725.01 by air but only USD 120.00 by sea.
Density changes the picture
Density is weight per cubic metre. Light, bulky goods are billed far above their real weight by air. Dense goods are billed at their real weight.
Here is what this means in practice. A 1 CBM pallet of cushions at 80 kg is billed as 166.67 kg by air. A 1 CBM crate of bearings at 600 kg is billed as 600 kg. By sea, both pay 1 revenue tonne.
So the sea advantage is biggest for light goods. For dense, high-value goods, air can make sense when a stock-out would cost more than the freight gap. The chart below shows the cost per CBM at four densities.
📌 Note: index air rates are averages for general cargo, usually for larger shipments. A 60 kg shipment often pays a higher rate per kg or a minimum charge. Ask for an all-in quote at your real weight.

Transit times from China to the Gulf, the Mediterranean, North Europe and the US
Speed is the reason to fly. But the real gap is door to door, not port to port. Sea transit in 2026 depends on routing, because many Asia to Europe services still sail around the Cape of Good Hope.
The ranges below come from forwarder pages and are indicative. Confirm each booking's schedule.
| Lane from China | Sea, port to port | Air | Source (indicative) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gulf: South China to UAE | 15 to 25 days; add 3 to 7 from North China | a few days | Goodhope Freight, UAE page |
| Gulf and Red Sea: South China to Saudi ports | 18 to 30 days | a few days | Goodhope Freight, Saudi page |
| Mediterranean: Shanghai to Genoa | 35 to 45 days via the Cape; about 25 to 30 via Suez before the crisis | 4 to 7 days to Milan | Topway Shipping, 10/04/2026 |
| North Europe: Shanghai to Rotterdam | about 27 days on a normal routing; 45 to 60 via the Cape, by origin and destination | a few days | Shiphub; SEKO, 04/09/2026 |
| US West Coast: Shanghai to Los Angeles | 14 to 20 days FCL; 15 to 25 days LCL | 5 to 7 days | Ship4wd |
Routing is improving but not normal. Ti Insight, citing Alphaliner, says 63.00% of Far East to Europe capacity ran on Suez services between 15/09/2026 and 15/10/2026. Ask your forwarder which route your vessel takes, because it can change the arrival date by two weeks.
Air has its own delays. Ship4wd gives 5 to 7 days from Shanghai to Los Angeles, but 6 to 10 days for a 100 kg shipment. Small loads often wait for consolidation, so plan for the longer end.
Current freight rates: Drewry WCI, Freightos FBX and air indices
Freight indices tell you whether a quote is normal. They do not replace it, because indices leave out local charges. Use them as a check, then ask two forwarders for dated quotes.
1. Drewry World Container Index (WCI)
Drewry publishes spot rates per 40ft container every Thursday. On 29/10/2026, its composite index was USD 4,429.00. Shanghai to Rotterdam was USD 3,686.00, Shanghai to Genoa USD 4,151.00 and Shanghai to Los Angeles USD 7,514.00. Shanghai to New York was USD 9,631.00.
2. Freightos Baltic Index (FBX)
Freightos published its weekly update on 28/10/2026. Asia to North Europe was USD 3,551.00 per 40ft and Asia to the Mediterranean USD 4,252.00. Asia to the US West Coast was USD 8,368.00 and to the East Coast USD 10,565.00.
3. Freightos Air Index (FAX)
The same update gave air rates per kg. China to North America was USD 7.13, up 4.00% on the week. China to North Europe was USD 4.35, up 12.00%.
4. TAC Index (Baltic Air Freight Index)
TAC Index runs the Baltic Air Freight Index. Air Cargo News reported that the global index rose 4.70% in the week to 19/10/2026, and stood 26.40% above a year earlier.
Here is what this means in practice. A full 40ft to Rotterdam cost about USD 3,686.00 at the index. One tonne by air to North Europe cost about USD 4,350.00. One tonne by air costs more than a whole container by sea.
Sea-air via Dubai and other hubs in 2026
Sea-air combines both modes. Goods sail from China to a hub, then fly to the final market. The goal is to land between the two: faster than sea, cheaper than air. DSV says its sea-air products can save up to 30.00% to 40.00% against standard air freight.
How the Dubai route works
Dubai built its sea-air hub around one bonded zone. JAFZA says the Dubai Logistics Corridor links Jebel Ali Port, the free zone and Al Maktoum International Airport. It cut sea-to-air transfer time from four hours to less than one. DSV markets a Dubai product called "Gulf Tiger" and a Singapore one called "Merlion".
What changed in 2026
This year the Dubai route is much harder. Ti Insight says the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to container shipping since late February 2026. Jebel Ali sits inside the Strait, so most container ships no longer reach it.
Carriers moved to ports outside the Strait. Ti Insight reports that Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd relaunched a Far East to Middle East loop calling at Khor Fakkan, replacing Jebel Ali. Gulf air capacity was still 20.00% below late February levels in the week to 11/10/2026.
Flexport says Dubai-routed sea-air is exposed to Middle East disruption. On 26/03/2026 it launched a sea-air service through Los Angeles instead. It quotes 27 days from Shanghai to European airports, at up to 41.00% below pure air freight.
Here is what this means in practice. For a Gulf buyer, sea to Khor Fakkan plus trucking can still work. For a European buyer, ask about Singapore or Los Angeles sea-air, and get the routing in writing. Trading through Dubai? See Dubai free zone vs mainland companies.
Worked example: three shipment sizes compared
Example: a Dutch online shop ships from Shanghai to Rotterdam. It compares air and sea for three order sizes. The air rate and the 40ft rate are published index figures. All other inputs are labelled assumptions, not quotes. Duty and VAT are left out, because they are the same in both modes.
Air and LCL: the same inputs as in the break-even section above.
Sea FCL: USD 3,686.00 per 40ft (Drewry WCI, 29/10/2026) + USD 900.00 local charges (assumption).
Time: 35 days by sea and 6 days by air, door to door, so air saves 29 days (assumption). Money tied up in stock costs 10.00% a year (assumption).
| Line | A: 4 cartons | B: one pallet | C: full 40ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume and actual weight | 0.30 CBM, 60 kg | 2.00 CBM, 400 kg | 55.00 CBM, 8,000 kg |
| Air volume weight (CBM × 166.67) | 50.00 kg | 333.33 kg | 9,166.67 kg |
| Chargeable weight (higher of the two) | 60.00 kg | 400.00 kg | 9,166.67 kg |
| Air freight (kg × USD 4.35) | 261.00 | 1,740.00 | 39,875.01 |
| Air total (+ USD 250.00) | 511.00 | 1,990.00 | 40,125.01 |
| Sea basis | LCL, minimum 1 revenue tonne | LCL, 2 revenue tonnes | FCL, one 40ft |
| Sea freight | 1 × 120.00 = 120.00 | 2 × 120.00 = 240.00 | 3,686.00 |
| Sea total (+ fixed fees) | 520.00 | 640.00 | 4,586.00 |
| Air minus sea | −9.00 (air cheaper) | 1,350.00 | 35,539.01 |
| Air ÷ sea | 0.98 | 3.11 | 8.75 |
| Goods value (assumption) | 1,500.00 | 8,000.00 | 60,000.00 |
| Cost of 29 days of stock (value × 10.00% × 29 ÷ 365) | 11.92 | 63.56 | 476.71 |
All amounts are in USD. Shipment A is the only case where air wins, by USD 9.00, because the sea minimum dominates. At that size, the faster mode is also the cheaper one.
Shipment B shows the usual pattern. Air costs USD 1,350.00 more, while 29 days of stock costs only USD 63.56. Fly only if those days earn more than the gap.
Shipment C makes the point clearly. Air costs USD 35,539.01 more, against USD 476.71 of stock cost. Freight by air would be 66.88% of the goods value, against 7.64% by sea.
Three ways to cut freight cost without losing speed
You rarely have to choose all air or all sea. These three moves keep most of the saving and most of the speed.
1. Split the order
Fly a small share of the order to fill the shelf, and ship the rest by sea. You pay air rates only on the first weeks of sales. Ask the factory to pack the air portion separately with its own documents.
2. Shrink the carton
Air bills volume, so empty space costs money. Ask for smaller master cartons or flat-packed parts. A 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton weighs 16.00 kg by volume; at 50 × 40 × 40 cm, 13.33 kg.
3. Choose the Incoterm that lets you control freight
Under FOB or FCA, you book the freight and see the price. Under CIF or DDP, the seller chooses, and some add a margin. Our guide to FOB, CIF and DDP for China imports explains who pays what.
What goes wrong in practice (and what to do)
Freight problems are rarely about the rate. Most surprises appear on the final invoice, after the goods have moved.
1. The air invoice is far above the quote
The quote used the supplier's weight, but the airline measured the cartons and billed volume weight. Get exact carton sizes before booking, and a quote on chargeable weight.
2. A small sea shipment costs as much as air
LCL minimums, CFS fees and the delivery order hit small loads hardest. Fix it by asking for a door-to-door LCL quote with every local fee listed. Compare it with an air quote at the same date.
3. The ship is rerouted and stock runs out
A Cape routing can add about two weeks. Near a stock-out, fly a small part of the order and leave the rest at sea. Next time, build a buffer into the reorder date.
4. Storage charges pile up at the port
Goods wait when a document is missing or wrong. Send your broker the commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading early. Our guide to import documents explained lists what each one must show.
📌 Note: lithium batteries, liquids and magnets face special air rules and may need dangerous-goods paperwork. Tell your forwarder before booking, because some airlines refuse them.
By region: MENA, Europe/UK, USA
MENA: in 2026, ask whether your Gulf container calls at Khor Fakkan or an Omani port, and who pays the trucking. Dubai duty is 5.00% of CIF, so freight is in the duty base (UAE government portal).
Europe/UK: the EU Import Control System 2 (ICS2) needs an entry summary declaration. Air cargo files a minimum data set before loading (European Commission: ICS2). The UK adds freight to the customs value up to the border (GOV.UK).
USA: the Importer Security Filing applies to cargo arriving by vessel, so it is a sea-only step (US CBP: ISF).

FAQ
Is air freight always more expensive than sea freight from China?
No. For very small shipments, sea minimums and fixed fees can make air the same price or cheaper. In our example, air won below 62.07 kg of chargeable weight.
How do I calculate chargeable weight for air freight?
Multiply length × width × height in cm and divide by 6,000. Compare the result with the actual weight and use the higher figure.
What does 1:6000 or 1:167 mean?
Both describe the same IATA standard. 6,000 cm³ count as 1 kg, so 1 CBM counts as 166.67 kg.
How long does sea freight from China take?
Port to port, plan about 15 to 25 days to the UAE and 14 to 20 days to Los Angeles. Genoa via the Cape takes about 35 to 45 days.
How long does air freight from China take?
Usually about 4 to 7 days airport to airport. Small shipments can take longer, because they wait for consolidation.
How much does air freight from China cost per kg?
On 28/10/2026, the Freightos Air Index was USD 4.35 per kg to North Europe and USD 7.13 to North America. Small shipments pay more.
Is sea-air via Dubai still a good option?
In 2026 it is disrupted, because the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed to container ships since late February. Ask about Singapore, Colombo or Los Angeles routings instead.
Do I pay less duty if I ship by sea?
The rate is the same. In the Gulf, EU and UK, freight is part of the customs value, so cheaper freight means slightly lower duty.
When should I choose express instead of air freight?
For small, dense parcels that need door-to-door delivery. For bulky boxes, the 5,000 divisor often makes express dearer.
