Short answer Alibaba Trade Assurance is a free protection for orders placed and paid on Alibaba.com. It covers orders not shipped, lost, late, defective or not as agreed. You must claim within 30 days of delivery. Cards cost 2.99% and a T/T about USD 40.00. Payments made outside the platform are not covered.
Key takeaways
It costs the buyer USD 0.00 and applies automatically to orders paid through Alibaba.com. Your payment is released to the supplier after you confirm receipt.
Claim within 30 days of delivery, or 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers. Cancel within 2 hours of payment for a full refund if nothing has shipped.
Payment fees differ a lot: cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay cost 2.99%, capped at USD 12,000.00 per payment. A T/T costs about USD 40.00 at your bank.
Late delivery pays little: under the on-time terms, compensation is 10.00% of the order value, capped at USD 100.00, paid as a coupon.
Off-platform T/T loses everything: in our USD 12,000.00 example, a USD 1,800.00 refund claim drops to USD 0.00.

A supplier on Alibaba.com sends you a quote, and the listing shows a Trade Assurance badge. You want to know one thing: if the goods arrive broken or late, do you get your money back? Alibaba Trade Assurance is the free buyer protection that answers that question, but only under conditions most buyers never read.
Most guides repeat the marketing line. This one shows what the protection covers, what each payment method costs and how a claim unfolds day by day. It ends with a worked dispute and a comparison with a direct bank transfer (T/T).
Alibaba Trade Assurance at a glance: the quick verdict
Trade Assurance is not insurance and not a guarantee of a full refund. Alibaba's own payment guide says it is free, applied automatically, and not a promise to refund every purchase. It works like escrow plus a referee. Alibaba holds the payment, then mediates if you and the supplier disagree.

| Which orders qualify? | Orders placed with a Trade Assurance supplier and paid through Alibaba.com | Alibaba.com Trade Assurance page |
| Claim window | 30 days from delivery; 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers | Alibaba.com |

Use the decision tree below before you pay. The first "no" usually tells you where the risk sits. If the supplier is not on Trade Assurance, or the deal terms live only in emails, the protection is weak or missing.

What Alibaba Trade Assurance covers
Alibaba lists six protections. Some apply only to certain countries, buyers or products. Read each one with its condition attached.
1. Payment held until you confirm receipt
Alibaba holds your payment in escrow and releases it after you confirm receipt. The platform pays the supplier, not you, so a dispute can freeze money not yet released.
2. Refunds when the order fails
The money-back policy covers orders that are not shipped or that go missing. It also covers goods that arrive with defects, wrong items or damage. You can claim a full or partial refund. You must prove the terms were agreed on the platform, so specs that exist only in a WhatsApp chat are hard to enforce.
3. On-time delivery compensation
If an eligible order is not dispatched or delivered by the stated date, you can apply for compensation. The terms set it at 10.00% of the actual order value, excluding service fees, capped at USD 100.00. It is paid as a coupon for future Trade Assurance orders, valid for 90 calendar days.
Here is what this means in practice: on a USD 600.00 sample order, a late delivery earns a USD 60.00 coupon. On a USD 12,000.00 order, 10.00% would be USD 1,200.00, but the cap cuts it to USD 100.00. That is only 0.83% of the order.
4. Easy Return in eligible countries
For defective products, Easy Return lets buyers in eligible countries send goods to a local warehouse for a refund. The 2023 guide lists Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, the UK and the US, among others. Under the on-time delivery terms, refunds and Easy Return are capped at USD 3,000.00 of product value plus shipping.
5. Cancellation within 2 hours
If you cancel within 2 hours of payment and the order has not shipped, the guide says you get a full and immediate refund. This is the fastest exit Trade Assurance offers, useful when you spot a wrong quantity or price right after paying.
6. After-sales services on eligible products
For eligible products, the guide lists installation, repair and free replacement parts for 1 year after purchase.
There is also a ceiling. Suppliers can carry a Trade Assurance limit. WorldFirst, Alibaba's sister payment company, gives an example. A GBP 15,000.00 order with a GBP 10,000.00 supplier limit can only be refunded up to GBP 10,000.00. Check the limit before a large order.
What Trade Assurance does not cover
Most rejected claims fail on the same few points, spread across several Alibaba pages. Here they are in one place.
1. Money paid outside Alibaba.com
Alibaba's advice is blunt: never pay outside the platform. WorldFirst adds that a payment sent directly to the seller's own account is not covered. A direct T/T to a supplier's bank account has no Trade Assurance protection, even if you found the supplier on Alibaba.
2. Terms that were not agreed on the platform
Refund claims need proof that the terms were agreed on Alibaba.com. China Justice Observer, a legal publication, reads the dispute rules the same way. It says only the official chat tool counts as evidence, unless both sides accept other messages.
3. Claims filed too late
The window is 30 days from delivery, or 60 days for Enterprise buyers. For delay compensation, you have 30 calendar days from the stated date. After that, the protection simply ends.
4. Amounts above the supplier's limit or the programme caps
The refund cannot exceed the supplier's Trade Assurance limit. Delay compensation stops at USD 100.00, and Easy Return refunds at USD 3,000.00 under the on-time terms.
5. Force majeure and change of mind
The on-time terms exclude events beyond Alibaba's control, such as government acts, natural disasters, war and strikes. Alibaba's seller blog also lists change of mind and subjective quality complaints as not covered. Treat that second list as indicative: it comes from a seller blog, not from the rules.
📌 Note: Trade Assurance covers the supplier's side of the deal. It does not pay your customs duty, port storage or lost sales. Those costs stay with you, so budget them separately. Our landed cost guide shows how.

Eligible payment methods and their fees
Every method checked out on Alibaba.com keeps Trade Assurance. So does a wire sent to the bank details Alibaba gives for your order. The fee depends on the method, not on the protection. Here is Alibaba's own list.
| Method | Fee (Alibaba.com) | Limit | Typical speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | 2.99% | USD 12,000.00 per payment, 20 currencies | 1-2 hours |
| PayPal | 2.99% | USD 12,000.00 | 1-2 hours |
| Apple Pay, Google Pay | 2.99% | USD 12,000.00 per transaction | 1-2 hours |
| Afterpay / Clearpay | not stated | USD 2,000.00 | not stated |
| International T/T | about USD 40.00 (sometimes USD 25.00), set by your bank | no limit | 3-7 days |
| Domestic wire | about 1 unit of local currency | USD 300,000.00 in local currency | 1-2 days |
| Payment terms 30/60 days | per terms | eligible buyers only | deferred |
The same Alibaba page also says card processing fees typically range from 2.95% to 3.50%. We use the 2.99% figure from its table, and flag the range as a sign that the fee can change. Check the fee shown at checkout before you confirm.
The break-even is simple. A USD 40.00 T/T costs less than a 2.99% card fee once the order passes USD 1,337.79. Below that, a card is cheaper and faster. Above USD 12,000.00, a card is not even possible in one payment.
Here is what this means in practice: a USD 12,000.00 order paid by card costs USD 358.80 in fees. The same order by T/T to Alibaba costs about USD 40.00. That USD 318.80 gap pays for an inspection day, which protects you more than the card does.
Your bank also adds an exchange margin. Compare providers in the cheapest ways to pay a Chinese supplier, or read paying a Chinese supplier from the USA.
How to file a Trade Assurance claim: the dispute timeline step by step
Alibaba's official pages fix a few dates and leave others open. Below, dates in bold are from Alibaba's own pages. The negotiation and escalation days are indicative, because the published sources do not agree.
1. Day 0: pay through Alibaba.com
Pay by an online method at checkout, or by T/T to the bank details shown on your order. With a T/T, put the Alibaba order number in the payment reference, as WorldFirst advises. From this moment, the 2-hour cancellation window runs.
2. Ship date passes: delay claim opens
If the stated date passes with no dispatch or delivery, you can apply for delay compensation. Do it through My Alibaba, Orders, All orders, within 30 calendar days of the stated date. Only one claim is allowed per Trade Assurance order.
3. Delivery day: inspect at once
Count cartons, test samples and photograph defects on arrival day. Your 30-day claim window starts at delivery. Some Alibaba seller blogs mention a 15-day inspection window, so move fast.
4. Open the refund request
Go to My orders, then Order details, then apply for a refund. State the amount and the order clause it breaks. Attach photos, an inspection report and the platform chat.
5. Negotiate with the supplier
The supplier proposes a full refund, a partial refund or a rejection. Published timings differ. WorldFirst says escalation opens on day 4 and is automatic on day 7. Alibaba seller blogs mention 3 days.
6. Escalate to Alibaba.com
The 2023 guide says that if the supplier does not respond, or you cannot agree, you can escalate the case. Alibaba then reviews evidence from both sides and decides. WorldFirst says Alibaba usually asks for evidence within 5 working days.
7. Receive the refund
If Alibaba rules in your favour, the refund goes back through the payment channel. An Alibaba seller blog gives 3 to 15 days depending on the method, for example 7 days for T/T and 10 days for cards. This is indicative, not an official rule.
What if you disagree with the decision? According to China Justice Observer's reading of Alibaba's agreements, a party can take a claim against Alibaba to the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. That is slow and costly, so for most small orders, the platform decision is the real end of the road.
Worked example: a defect dispute on a USD 12,000.00 order
This is a labelled example, not a real case. A Riyadh importer orders 2,000 LED desk lamps at USD 6.00 each, USD 12,000.00 in total. The order on Alibaba.com states: 6 W, CE marking, every unit light-tested before packing. The buyer pays the full amount by T/T to Alibaba.
On day 3 after delivery, a full check shows 300 lamps (15.00%) do not light. On day 6, the buyer claims 300 × USD 6.00 = USD 1,800.00.
The supplier offers USD 900.00 (50.00%). The buyer escalates, citing the "every unit tested" clause and the test report. In this example, Alibaba grants USD 1,800.00. The outcome is assumed for illustration; real decisions depend on the evidence.
| Line | Basis | Trade Assurance (USD) | Off-platform T/T (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goods | 2,000 × 6.00 | 12,000.00 | 12,000.00 |
| Payment fee | TA: one T/T, about 40.00 (Alibaba estimate); off-platform: 2 × 15.00 Airwallex US SWIFT (30/70 split) | 40.00 | 30.00 |
| Arrival test | assumption | 250.00 | 250.00 |
| Refund | 300 × 6.00, granted in this example; none off-platform | −1,800.00 | 0.00 |
| Net cost | 12,000.00 + fee + 250.00 − refund | 10,490.00 | 12,280.00 |
| Cost per working lamp | net cost ÷ 1,700 | 6.17 | 7.22 |
The gap is USD 1,790.00 on one order. The extra USD 10.00 in payment fees bought a real chance of a refund. Off-platform, the buyer can only negotiate. With the balance already paid, leverage is close to zero.
Two details made this claim strong. The test clause was written into the Alibaba order, and the buyer filed on day 6. Without either, the same defect could end in a rejection.
A pre-shipment inspection is better still: it finds defects before the money leaves. See our pre-shipment inspection guide.
Trade Assurance vs paying off-platform by T/T
Many suppliers ask for a direct transfer "to save fees". Sometimes it is honest; sometimes it starts a scam. Ask what you give up for a small saving.
| Point | Trade Assurance (on-platform) | Direct T/T (off-platform) |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives the money | Alibaba.com, released after you confirm | The supplier, at once |
| Fee | Card 2.99% or T/T about USD 40.00 | Your bank or provider fee, e.g. USD 15.00 Airwallex US SWIFT (SHA) |
| Refund route | Platform claim and mediation | Only the supplier's goodwill, or court or arbitration |
| Claim window | 30 days after delivery (60 for Enterprise) | None |
| Late delivery | 10.00%, max USD 100.00, where eligible | Only what your contract says |
| Wrong bank account risk | Low: Alibaba gives the bank details | High: fake bank details in emails |
| Best for | First orders, samples, new suppliers | Trusted repeat suppliers, with inspection before balance |
Off-platform payment is not always wrong. A buyer on a fifth order with a verified factory may prefer a 30/70 split with inspection before the balance. Then the inspection is your protection. Run our supplier verification checklist first. Keep the inspection report: it is your only evidence if talks fail.
A middle path exists. Pay both the deposit and the balance through Trade Assurance, with an inspection in between. You keep the protection and the leverage together. Write the payment stages into the order before paying.
How to set up an order so a claim can win
Most claims are won or lost before the goods ship. Write every promise into the Alibaba order, in numbers a third party can check.
Here is what to put in the order, field by field:
Product specs: materials, sizes, power, colour codes, with tolerances. Attach the approved sample photos.
Quality standard: the inspection level and the defects that count as failures.
Shipping date: one exact date, not "about 30 days".
Incoterm and port: for example FOB Shenzhen. Our Incoterms guide explains each rule.
Packing and labels: carton marks, barcodes, language on the box.
Documents: invoice, packing list and test reports. See import documents explained.
Keep all talks in Alibaba's chat. After a call, summarise it in the platform chat and ask the supplier to confirm. That turns a phone promise into evidence.
What goes wrong in practice (and what to do)
Trade Assurance works best for clear, measurable failures, and badly for grey areas. Here are the common problems and fixes.
1. The supplier asks you to pay a "company account" by email
This removes your protection and may be fraud. Pay only to the bank details shown on the Alibaba order. If money has already gone to a wrong account, call your bank at once and ask for a recall.
2. The order value is above the supplier's limit
The refund is capped at the limit. Split the order, or choose a supplier with a higher limit. For a large order, add an inspection before the balance.
3. The defect is real but "subjective"
"Poor quality" loses; "seam opens at 5 kg" wins. Put measurable tests in the order. Use an independent inspection report as your main evidence.
4. You opened the cartons too late
Goods sit in a warehouse and the 30-day window closes. Check a sample on the day of delivery, even if you sell later.
5. The supplier offers store credit instead of cash
You can refuse and escalate. Accept a coupon only if you will order again from that supplier soon.
📌 Note: A Trade Assurance badge does not mean Alibaba has checked the factory. It only means the supplier can take protected orders. Verify the company, its licence and its bank name before any large payment.
By region: MENA, Europe/UK, USA
Only Easy Return eligibility and fraud reporting change by region.
MENA (Gulf, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan): no MENA country appears on the 2023 Easy Return list, so plan returns at your own cost. In the UAE, report fraud through the channels on the UAE government's cybercrime page. See also paying a Chinese supplier from the UAE.
Europe and the UK: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and the UK are on the Easy Return list. Report fraud via Europol's national reporting links or the UK's Action Fraud.
USA: the US is on the Easy Return list. Report payment fraud to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3).

FAQ
Is Alibaba Trade Assurance free for buyers?
Yes. Alibaba says the service is free and applied automatically. You only pay the fee of your payment method, such as 2.99% by card.
Does Trade Assurance cover a T/T to the supplier's own bank account?
No. Only payments made through Alibaba.com, including a T/T to the bank details on your order, are protected. A transfer to the supplier's private or company account outside the platform is not.
How long do I have to open a Trade Assurance claim?
30 days from delivery, or 60 days for Enterprise and Enterprise Pro buyers. For late delivery compensation, apply within 30 calendar days of the stated date.
How much do I get if my order is late?
Under the on-time delivery terms, 10.00% of the order value, capped at USD 100.00. It is paid as a coupon valid for 90 days.
Can I get a full refund under Trade Assurance?
Yes, if the order is not shipped, goes missing, or clearly breaks the agreed terms. Alibaba states it is not a guarantee of full refunds for all purchases. The refund is also capped by the supplier's limit.
Which is cheaper on Alibaba, card or T/T?
A card costs 2.99%, a T/T about USD 40.00. The T/T is cheaper above USD 1,337.79, and the only option above USD 12,000.00 in one payment.
Does Trade Assurance cover customs duty or shipping damage?
It covers goods that arrive damaged or wrong. It does not pay your import duty, VAT or port charges.
Can I return goods I simply do not like?
Generally no. Easy Return is for defective products in eligible countries. A change of mind is not a breach of the order.
What if Alibaba rejects my claim?
You can still negotiate with the supplier or use the contract's dispute clause. Arbitration in Hong Kong exists, but rarely suits small orders.
This guide is general information for importers. It is not legal, tax or financial advice. Alibaba.com can change its fees, limits and rules at any time; check the current terms on your order page before you pay.
