Short answer 1688 is Alibaba Group's domestic Chinese wholesale site; Alibaba.com is its export platform. In our examples, 1688 prices looked 24.72% to 36.00% cheaper, but sellers ship inside China, in CNY. After an agent, courier, export papers and checks, one gap fell from 36.00% to 24.57%. Choose Alibaba.com for custom or regulated products.
Key takeaways
Same group, different buyers: 1688.com is "China's leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace", with over 1 million paying members. Alibaba.com serves businesses in 190+ countries and regions.
Foreigners can buy, with friction: WorldFirst says foreign buyers register on 1688 as individuals. They pay in CNH through World Pay, with FX capped at 0.50% for major pairs.
The headline gap is not your gap: in our labelled example, a 36.00% cheaper unit price became a 24.57% saving after five extra costs.
Most 1688 sellers ship only inside China, so you need a consolidation warehouse and a forwarder for export.
Alibaba.com wins on protection and paperwork: Trade Assurance covers non-shipment, defects and late delivery for 30 days after delivery. Suppliers quote FOB with export documents.

You found a product on Alibaba.com. Then someone told you the same item costs a third less on 1688. So the real question in 1688 vs Alibaba is simple. Can you actually buy on 1688 from Dubai, Paris or Texas? And is the saving real once the goods reach you?
Most comparisons stop at "1688 is cheaper but in Chinese". That is true, and it misses the money. The price gap shrinks once you add the costs 1688 does not show: an agent, a courier inside China, export papers and quality checks. This guide puts numbers on each one, then tells you when Alibaba.com is simply the better tool.
1688 vs Alibaba: the quick verdict
Both sites belong to Alibaba Group, and both were launched in 1999. They are not two versions of the same shop. 1688 is built for Chinese resellers who buy stock. Alibaba.com is built for foreign companies who import.
That one difference drives everything else: the language, the currency, who pays the courier, and who handles customs in China. The table sums it up for a first-time importer.
| Question | 1688.com | Alibaba.com |
|---|---|---|
| Main buyer | Chinese wholesalers and online sellers | Businesses in 190+ countries and regions |
| Can a foreign buyer register? | Yes, as an individual (per WorldFirst) | Yes, open to foreign buyers |
| Language | Chinese; use browser translation | 16 languages |
| Payment | CNY/CNH; Alipay-linked account; World Pay | Cards, wallets, bank transfer |
| Protection | Secured transaction (担保交易) | Trade Assurance |
| Delivery | Mostly inside China only | Export to your port or door |
| Best for | Stock items, small tests, mixed lots | Custom, branded or regulated products |
The decision tree below turns this into three questions. If you answer "yes" to a custom product or a regulated product, stop there. Alibaba.com is usually the safer door for those orders, whatever the unit price says.

What 1688.com and Alibaba.com actually are
Alibaba Group describes 1688.com as "China's leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace". It calls it the "product source for Chinese e-commerce". As of fiscal year 2024, 1688.com had over 1 million paying members, according to the group's business page.
Alibaba.com is the group's first business, launched in 1999. In fiscal year 2024 it served more than 48 million small and medium-sized enterprises from over 190 countries and regions. Its seller page lists 16 supported languages and more than 200,000 suppliers.
So many factories sell on both. A maker in Yiwu may list a stock item on 1688 for Chinese shops. The same maker, or a trading company, may list it on Alibaba.com with an export price. The export price includes work the domestic price does not. Think of English sales staff, export packing, the China customs declaration and a margin for risk.
1688 has also been opening up to foreign buyers. A KrASIA report from 27/02/2024 says it upgraded its cross-border services in 11/2023. The same report cites 5.94 million cross-border buyers from January to November 2023. These are reported figures, not official 1688 data, so treat them as indicative.
Here is what this means in practice: 1688 is a real, large market, not a grey channel. But it was not designed for your import paperwork, and that gap is yours to fill.
Can you buy on 1688 from abroad? Three routes
Yes. WorldFirst, the Ant Group payment firm that partners with 1688, says foreign buyers register as individuals, even when they buy for a business. Company registration on 1688 is for Chinese sellers. Sole traders can buy for their business through a personal account.
Registering is the easy part. Paying, talking to sellers and getting goods out of China are the hard parts. There are three ways to handle them.
1. Your own 1688 account, paid with WorldFirst World Pay
WorldFirst calls World Pay (跨境宝) the official payment method for 1688. You open a World Account, add funds and convert them to CNH, the offshore yuan. WorldFirst's UK guide says FX is capped at 0.50% for major currency pairs. Then you link your 1688 account with an SMS code.
At checkout, you choose "Secured transaction" (担保交易) and then World Pay. The seller receives yuan. WorldFirst's EU FAQ lists a 0.80% standard rate for auto-debit payments and a tiered service fee of up to 0.20%.
Here is what this means in practice: this route gives you the lowest price, but you do the sourcing, chatting and checking yourself. You also still need a warehouse address in China.
2. A shopping or sourcing agent
An agent buys on 1688 for you, pays in yuan, receives the parcels and ships them out. The agent solves language, payment and the China address in one step. You pay for that through a service fee, a margin on the goods or fees on shipping.
Fee models vary a lot. Superbuy, a consumer-focused agent, lists no purchasing service fee on 1688 items. It charges for international shipping, storage after the free period and extra services instead.
Here is what this means in practice: compare the total landed price from two agents, not the headline fee. A "free" agent can cost more than a 5.00% agent once shipping is added. Our guide to China sourcing agent fees covers contracts and red flags in depth.
3. A cross-border service or 1688's own cross-border channel
Some tools translate 1688 listings and send orders to their own China warehouse. 1688 also runs a cross-border entry in its app, according to KrASIA. Coverage, fees and languages change often, so check the service's own terms for your country before you rely on it.
Here is what this means in practice: these services suit repeat buyers of stock goods. For a first order, an agent who sends photos of your actual batch is usually easier.
Fees and rules change often. Get the TRG Importer Brief: one short email a week with changes that affect importers.
How much cheaper is 1688? The price gap, with labelled examples
This is the question every importer asks. WorldFirst says buyers report savings of "up to 40.00%" against the same supplier's Alibaba.com listing. That figure is buyer-reported, not measured, so we treat it as indicative.
The examples below are illustrative TRG figures, not live quotes. They show a typical pattern: the domestic price sits well below the export quote. We convert yuan at CNY 6.65 per USD 1.00. That is the ECB cross rate of 30/10/2026 (EUR/CNY 7.4326 ÷ EUR/USD 1.1172).
| Example product | 1688 unit price | In USD | Alibaba.com quote (FOB) | Headline gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone case | CNY 4.50 | USD 0.68 | USD 0.95 | 28.42% |
| Silicone spatula | CNY 3.20 | USD 0.48 | USD 0.75 | 36.00% |
| LED strip, 5 m | CNY 18.00 | USD 2.71 | USD 3.60 | 24.72% |
Why is the domestic price lower? The 1688 price usually stops at the seller's door in China. It may exclude export packing, the export declaration and an English-speaking sales team. Domestic sellers also compete on volume, with thin margins.
The Alibaba.com quote is often FOB (Free On Board). The seller then pays to clear the goods for export and load them at a Chinese port. Our guide to FOB, CIF and DDP explains what each term includes.
📌 Note: Compare like with like. A 1688 price is close to ex-works China. An Alibaba.com FOB price already includes export clearance. Add the missing steps to the 1688 price before you decide.
Language and payment barriers on 1688
1688 is in Mandarin. WorldFirst suggests Chrome's translation prompt for browsing and image search to find similar items. Most sellers move the conversation to WeChat once you start talking, so you will chat in Chinese too.
Translation tools work for listings. They fail on details: material grades, carton marks, plug types or "we will ship in 7 days after payment". If the order matters, put the key terms in writing in both languages.
Payment is the bigger wall. 1688 checkout runs in yuan. WorldFirst's World Pay works in CNH only; other balances must be converted first. WorldFirst's 1688 authorisation page lists a link to an Alipay account registered in Mainland China among its conditions. Check whether you can meet it before you plan to buy direct.
There are also limits on what World Pay covers. WorldFirst's EU FAQ says credit-term and contract orders cannot use the service. Orders with prohibited items are excluded too. Each 1688 account can link to only one World Account.
On Alibaba.com, the barriers are lower. The Trade Assurance page lists cards, digital wallets, bank transfers and payment plans for eligible buyers. Payments are held and released to the supplier after you confirm receipt. For a bank wire, compare providers in our guide on how to pay a Chinese supplier with Wise, Payoneer or Airwallex.
MOQ and shipping inside China
Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is where 1688 shines. WorldFirst says many 1688 suppliers accept one to two units for standard stock items. That makes 1688 good for testing ten designs before you commit.
On Alibaba.com, MOQs are set by each supplier and are often higher for custom work. Alibaba Guaranteed listings work more like a shop. Alibaba's news site says they come at fixed prices with shipping included, dispatch within 72 hours and quick money back.
The catch with 1688 is delivery. Most 1688 suppliers ship within China only, according to WorldFirst. Your goods first travel by domestic courier to a consolidation warehouse. WorldFirst names Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Yiwu as common hubs.
At the warehouse, staff count the parcels, check them and repack them for export. Each seller charges its own courier fee. If one seller is late, the whole shipment waits.
Then a freight forwarder books air, sea or rail and files the export declaration. From there, the costs are the same as any China import. Work them out with our landed cost guide with formula and examples.
Here is what this means in practice: a "low MOQ" order from five 1688 sellers means five courier fees. It also means five chances of delay and one consolidation bill. Plan for it in your price.
Worked example: 2,000 spatulas via 1688 vs Alibaba.com
Example: a kitchenware seller in Riyadh wants 2,000 silicone spatulas. The 1688 seller asks CNY 3.20 per unit. An Alibaba.com supplier quotes USD 0.75 FOB Ningbo. Both routes are compared at a China port, so sea freight and Saudi customs are the same and left out.
The agent fee, courier, QC, export papers and payment cost are TRG assumptions for this example. They are not quotes. Change them to your own figures.
| Line | Basis | Via 1688 (USD) | Via Alibaba.com (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goods | CNY 6,400.00 ÷ 6.65; 2,000 × USD 0.75 | 962.41 | 1,500.00 |
| Courier inside China | CNY 150.00 ÷ 6.65 (assumption) | 22.56 | included |
| Agent fee | 5.00% × 962.41 (assumption) | 48.12 | none |
| QC check and repack | flat (assumption) | 40.00 | not included |
| Export declaration and papers | flat (assumption) | 60.00 | included in FOB |
| Payment and FX | 1.00% of goods (assumption) | 9.62 | 15.00 |
| Total at a China port | sum of lines | 1,142.71 | 1,515.00 |
| Per unit | total ÷ 2,000 | 0.57 | 0.76 |
The headline gap was 36.00% (USD 0.48 vs USD 0.75). The real gap at the port is 24.57%: 1 − 1,142.71 ÷ 1,515.00. On this order, 1688 still saves USD 372.29.
Two things are not in the table. First, the Alibaba.com order can be paid under Trade Assurance, with a refund route if goods are defective or late. Second, the 1688 route has no QC firm by default; our USD 40.00 is a quick agent check, not a full inspection.
If one batch in five fails, the saving can vanish. A professional pre-shipment inspection costs more than a quick check, but it protects larger orders. Use the saving to pay for checks, not to skip them.
When Alibaba.com is the better choice
1688 is not always the smart buy. In these five cases, the export platform usually wins, even at a higher unit price.
1. You need a custom product, logo or packaging
1688 is built around stock. Custom work needs drawings, samples, a written spec and an export-minded seller. Alibaba.com suppliers expect OEM requests and quote with packaging and labelling in English.
2. Your product is regulated in your market
Electrical goods, toys, cosmetics and food-contact items need test reports for your market. Saudi Arabia, for example, requires a SABER shipment certificate for each consignment. A domestic 1688 seller rarely holds reports for foreign rules.
3. You want buyer protection on the platform
Alibaba Trade Assurance covers orders that are not shipped, go missing or arrive with defects. It also offers delay compensation. On 1688, your protection depends on the secured transaction flow and on your agent.
4. You need export documents in your name
Your customs broker needs a commercial invoice, packing list and bill of lading that match. An Alibaba.com FOB supplier issues these as part of the deal. On 1688, an agent or forwarder must create them, and errors are common. See our guide to import documents for what each one must show.
5. You have no one in China to check the goods
Without an agent or QC firm, nobody sees your 1688 goods until they land. An export supplier sends production photos, samples and accepts third-party inspection as normal practice.
What goes wrong in practice (and what to do)
Most 1688 problems are not scams. They are gaps between a domestic shop and an international buyer. Here are the common ones and the fix for each.
1. The seller will not ship abroad or sell to you
WorldFirst warns that not all 1688 suppliers export. Ask before you pay: "Can you deliver to my agent's warehouse and issue a packing list?" If the answer is vague, move on.
2. Parcels arrive at the warehouse short or mixed
Ask the warehouse to count and photograph every parcel on arrival. Report gaps to the seller the same day, through the 1688 order chat, so the secured transaction record shows it.
3. The goods are copies of a brand
Cheap "brand" items on a domestic site are a customs risk. They can be seized at your border. Buy only unbranded goods or goods with written authorisation.
4. The saving disappears in fees
Rebuild the worked example with your real quotes. If the true gap is under about 10.00%, the time and risk may not be worth it. That threshold is a TRG rule of thumb, not a market figure.
Whichever platform you use, check the company behind the shop. Our 12-point checklist to verify a Chinese supplier shows how to check a business licence for free.
By region: MENA, Europe and UK, USA
Small 1688 orders often travel as parcels, so the low-value parcel rules in your country matter more than usual. Here are the points to check, with official sources.
MENA: check your HS code and certificates first, on Dubai Customs or ZATCA. Saudi Arabia needs a SABER shipment certificate per consignment. Egypt requires an ACID number through Nafeza before goods are loaded.
Europe and UK: the European Commission confirms a EUR 3.00 customs duty per item on parcels worth up to EUR 150.00, from 01/07/2026. In the UK, GOV.UK says non-excise goods up to GBP 135.00 pay no customs duty.
USA: the Federal Register confirms the USD 800.00 de minimis exemption has been suspended for all countries since 29/08/2025. Check duty on the USITC tariff schedule before you order.
